Guess what I just figured out, that I thought I would share with you. (The ones who are actually reading this blog that is).
When you are looking for a new steady job while you are temping, even though you have been working at the particular company for months, even years, you may NOT list your "supervisor" that you work for at that company as a reference.
This is because legally you don't work for the company where you have been contracted for! You are still legally employed by the agency!
Oh yes, and another thing. I'm getting really tired of all these other agencies telling me that they have a great position available and would I be willing to come in for an interview. Do they think that I am that naive? Hello? Have you seen the job market out there? It isn't pretty. Yet, there are still jobs, and the ones that are out there, are hard to find. They go with the best candidate.
The recruiters from agencies don't care. You are just a number to them. Don't let them just sly you. Do your homework first!
Just don't tell them the temp told you so.
Thanks.
Been following you on twitter, and let me just say... AMEN!
ReplyDeleteLet's face it, the job market is ridiculous right now. The only places hiring outside of health care are companies looking for commission sales people. Um... but no one is BUYING! Which makes the industry for what I do (art) even more difficult than normal for the average buyer to reconcile spending money with.
I tried to work with a temp agency once, and that is the only job in my LIFE that I have been fired from. Ever. And it was after the 3rd day. I wasn't made aware of my work not being up to snuff, and was completely blindsided.
I had however heard the supervisor and others mentioning (right behind me and other employees as we were working) that they were going to be taking on 10 more hires from the agency that coming Monday (it was Thursday). After I left for the day, I received a phone call from the agency and was fired over voicemail and banned from the establishment of where I had worked at. I was totally stunned.
And then I realized... I WAS just a number to them. If the agencies get recruits (they got over 600 applicants for this position that was only to hire 175), to keep their "our placement of employees is in the 90th percentile" line, then they have to do it somehow. Even if it is to use human beings like a people mill.
As long as they make their quota, who cares if it screws up the person's employment history, or unemployment check while they're trying to search for a new job.
It's happening everywhere, from coast to coast inside and out. It's terrible. And its even more terrible that you're so right. I would never again go through a temp agency for a job. The experience completely soured me.
Yes, I agree. Yet, we all do need jobs especially in this economy. I think that certain agencies are better than others, but there are a few out there that just don't care. The worst one for me was I was told to leave after just half a day. The agency told me that I looked like a rag a muffin. Seriously? Wow. Okay then, I think the company wanted a piece of "candy" to look at and not a hard worker. Just my opinion...but thanks for the comment. I'm now following you on Live Journal under giazz_40
